Instructional Design and Project Management for the newly reorganized BP 21st Century Petrotechnical Development department. I was part of a team of on-site consultants tasked with researching and making recommendations as the new department transitions into an internal service organization able to provide support for both traditional classroom instruction as well as new e-Learning initiatives. |
| Computer -Based
Training Specialist Harris County Hospital District (HCHD) 11/2007 - 1/2008 |
I researched and made recommendations for the County’s new Learning Management System. HCHD currently does not have an LMS/LCMS in place and is in the process of moving to a new patient care software system called EPIC. The LMS needed to integrate with the existing PeopleSoft system and be hosted internally. This 76 million dollar initiative involved the entire district including two major hospitals, 12 clinics and several other county facilities. In addition, I helped to develop refresher training as well as CBT/WBT modules to assist in the migration process. These modules will be the only method of training for physicians and medical students. These materials were developed using the Adobe Captivate software and the Adobe Creative Studio Suite. |
Senior
Instructional Designer 02 - 09/2007 |
Design and Development of online training moduels for ExxonMobil's Safety, Health & Environment, SH&E, group. We reworked the existing classroom-led materials into online, web-based, e-Learning modules. The materials are to be hosted on ExxonMobil servers. The prime development software was Articulate Presenter Studio as the original materials were developed in MS Powerpoint. Additional graphics were developed in Adobe Fireworks and Photoshop. |
Learning
Designer 08/2006 - 02/2007 |
This project was part of the Shell Project Academy, SPA. SPA is designed for senior level managers within Shell to assist with their project managment and general manage skills. The project used a true Blended Learning approach with both online and classroom sessions being utilized. The online materials were hosted in TeleTOP, a commercial Learning Managment System, LMS. |

I was assigned as a Curriculum Developer in support of NASA’s International Space Station Systems groups: DT 46 Environmental Control & Life Support System (ECLSS) and DT 47 Thermal Control System/Electrical Power System (TCS/EPS). My duties include instructional design and curriculum development support for new lessons and lesson revisions. Our process utilizes task analysis, application of the ADDIE model and various adult learning theory methodologies. Our learner audience consists of astronauts, flight controllers, and instructors in the Human Spaceflight Program at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. My skills were showcased in the creation of many stand alone CBT/WBT lessons, the enhancement of classroom lessons, and in the development an electronic evaluation system for NASA’s most recent class of Astronaut Candidates (ASCANs). The electronic form was used to track ASCAN progress in their mastery level systems engineering classes. I designed and developed a training system using Macromedia's Captivate for instructors to learn how to use this new product. Another important part of my role at NASA was the evaluation of new technical instructors and teaching classes in the Instructor Training Course (ITC). ITC was built directly on the Air Force ITC model for developing new instructors. Courses included adult learning theory, objective writing, the evaluation process and classroom presentation techniques. I truly enjoy using my extensive instructional technology background to provide innovative solutions into the curriculum. I believe in a hands-on approach in the design and development and am current in many specialized software packages for courseware creation, job aids, WBT/CBT and blended learning solutions. From front-end analysis to the final learning products, I can perform both design and development tasks. I am especially interested in the growing use of mobile technologies (PDAs, cellphones, iPods) and their potential in the training field. My previous assignment in the Training, Development & Support Computer-Based Training Group included serving as the Project Manager and Lead Technical Developer in numerous web-based training projects. As Project Lead and Manager I oversaw diverse teams of developers including graphic artists, programmers and subject matter experts. I prepared the project scope and design document, development timeline and resource budget and was responsible for meeting the project deadlines. These lessons were developed in HTML using Dreamweaver and Coursebuilder, and Flash for animations with delivery over the company intranet. These lesson are used during ground-based pre-flight training and during operations on-board the Space Shuttle and International Space Station. |
Assistant Professor Lesson Learned: |
I taught Computers & Technology, a course in the School of Education. Topics covered included: the Microsoft Office Suite, HTML Authoring, Digital Video for multimedia & the Internet, Distance Learning Technologies & Multimedia in Education. They taught me that teaching is one of the most rewarding and difficult professions on earth. One teacher reaches multitudes of learners and touches their lives way beyond the classroom. I considered it a privilege to teach the teachers of the future. |
Information Technology Consultant |
Summary: I was paid to play with technology and imagine how it could be used for good instead of evil. Details: I designed and developed DVD-based video and multimedia projects for cross-platform delivery on Macintosh, Windows & consumer DVD player platforms. I developed a collection of best practices in the areas of knowledge management and the building of electronic communities and provided recommendations for the integration of technology into the professional development of educators and for classroom usage. I produced and authored a CD-ROM & Web-based multimedia overview of The Electronic Community of Teachers (ECOT) project for cross-platform delivery including digital video using QuickTime, Real Media, Windows Media Player and Macromedia's Flash for interactive animations. http://ecot.rice.edu/ I helped facilitate the design and use of the Rice University-built Digital Media Capture System. This system allows for the real time creation of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 digital video resources. The media products were designed for use on Rice's streaming video network for Internet-based delivery as well as in DVD authoring environments. I provided training and technical support for over 500 educators involved in the ECOT project including the use of our knowledge management system and Internet-based digital resources. I prepared recommendations on technology purchases including the Digital Media Capture System, a DVD authoring system, digital video editing stations, digital video cameras, laptop computers (530) for staff and teacher use at the Houston Independent School District (HISD), CD-ROM duplication equipment, videoconferencing systems, learning management systems (WebCT, Blackboard, etc.) and knowledge management software. I created online course materials for the HISD's Alternative Certification Program and transformed traditional instructor-led materials for use in Internet-based courses. I directed the daily operations of Rice University's OWLink network, a distance-learning project involving teachers and students throughout the state of Texas. This system used a mix of ATM and T-1 networking for videoconferencing at multiple sites.http://cttl.rice.edu |
Instructional Technologist |
I helped develop protocols to support and utilize NASA's Electronic Classroom, a multimedia-enhanced teaching environment with videoconferencing capabilities for educational outreach. I designed and authored multimedia materials to promote and support new protocols in distance learning including digital video production, integrated media for use in electronic field trips, CD-ROM and World Wide Web publishing. |
